SEO Research: Semrush Pro ($139.95/month)

Semrush is the highest-EV tool in the content marketing stack. Every article you write should start with keyword data: what terms people are actually searching, how competitive they are, and what the top-ranking pages look like. Without this, you're writing for an audience that may not be Googling for what you produced.

Editing and Polish: Grammarly (Free or $12/month Premium)

Grammarly catches the final-mile issues that matter for published content: passive voice in the wrong places, sentences that are clear in your head but ambiguous to a reader, tone mismatches in client-facing copy, and the kind of clarity problems that Claude sometimes introduces in drafted content.

The free tier covers grammar and basic clarity. Premium adds tone detection, style suggestions, clarity scoring, and the plagiarism checker. For content published under your brand, Premium is worth $12/month to catch issues before they reach an audience. The browser extension works inline everywhere you write (Google Docs, WordPress, Notion, email), which means zero friction to use it.

Grammarly and Claude are complementary, not competing: Claude generates first drafts at speed, Grammarly polishes them. Running content through both catches different problem types.

Social Distribution: Buffer ($6/channel/month)

Writing a great article doesn't drive traffic by itself. You need to distribute each piece across the channels where your audience is. Buffer is the best tool for scheduling social media posts at content marketing volume: cheap, reliable, and focused on publishing rather than analytics theater.

Tools I Intentionally Left Out (and Why)

Jasper AI: Jasper closed its affiliate program in January 2025 and has been repositioning toward enterprise teams. For most content marketers, Claude at $20/month produces better output at half the cost. Skip it.

Surfer SEO: Useful for content briefs and on-page SEO scoring, but at $69-$219/month it overlaps heavily with Semrush's content tools. If you already have Semrush Guru, Surfer is redundant. If you have Semrush Pro, Surfer's brief tool is the only thing you'd be paying for, which isn't worth $69/month.

Hootsuite: At $99-$249/month for social scheduling, Hootsuite's pricing is aimed at large agencies managing multiple client accounts. Buffer does the same job for content marketers at a fraction of the cost. If you need approval workflows and client reporting, Hootsuite; if you just need to schedule posts, Buffer.

ChatGPT Plus: Worth having if you need real-time web search (Claude's cutoff is August 2025), DALL-E image generation, or Code Interpreter for data analysis. Not worth buying instead of Claude for writing-focused content marketing. Consider both only if you have clear use cases for each.

The Content Production Workflow

With this stack, a well-optimized content production cycle looks like:

Monday: Use Semrush Keyword Gap to find the next 5 article opportunities from competitive research. Prioritize by search volume x business relevance x difficulty.
